Choosing an app
Which receiver app fits your routine?
Updated 11 October 2026 · Sotto 1.0.11
Sotto is a free iPhone alternative for everyday control of compatible Denon and Marantz receivers. The official receiver apps and HEOS remain useful for different jobs. Choose by your model and the task you want to do.
This comparison is written by Sotto’s developer. It describes the apps’ purposes; it is not a benchmark of speed or reliability.
| App | Useful for | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Sotto | Everyday receiver controls, saved scenes, volume limits and iPhone automation. Every feature is free; optional tips unlock nothing. | iPhone, iOS 18+, local network and compatible IP-control hardware. Model support. |
| Denon AVR Remote | Denon’s official app for receiver operation and supported settings. | The manufacturer’s exact model list and firmware requirements. |
| Marantz AVR Remote | Marantz’s official receiver app, including supported source, surround and setup controls. | The manufacturer’s exact model list; older models can require another app. |
| HEOS | Music-service browsing, HEOS device setup and multiroom playback. | HEOS-enabled equipment and availability of your music service. |
Choose Sotto for the controls you reach for
Use Sotto when you want an iPhone remote centered on volume, sources and saved activities, with Siri Shortcuts and Control Center. It does not require a Sotto account or subscription.
Keep HEOS for your music library and rooms
Sotto can show receiver now-playing information and send supported playback commands. It does not replace HEOS’s music-service catalog, device setup or room-grouping workflow. You can choose the app appropriate to the task, while allowing only one active receiver-control connection where the hardware requires it.
When another option is the better fit
- Use the official app or receiver setup menus for manufacturer-specific configuration and calibration tasks Sotto does not expose.
- Use an app designed for Android or a native Watch experience if that is your requirement. Sotto’s native app is for iPhone.
- If no remote app can find the receiver, fix the network or permission problem before switching apps.
